Contrary to popular belief, Lorem Ipsum is not simply random text. It has roots in classical Latin literature since 45 BC. A Latin professor, Richard McClintock, at Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia, went through the cites of the word, consectetur, from a Lorem Ipsum passage in classical literature, and discovered the undoubtable source. Lorm Ipsum comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of "de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum" (The Extremes of Good and Evil) by Cicero, written in 45 BC. The book is a treatise on moral theory, and was very popular during the Renaissance. The first line of the Lorem Ipsum passage, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", comes from a line in section 1.10.32.
The standard Lorem Ipsum texts used since the 1500s have been reproduced for those interested. Sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33, by Cicero, are also reproduced from the original form, with the English versions taken from the 1914 H. Rackham translation.
